TOKYO -- An ill-fated idea to create a regional mutual support mechanism in the wake of Asia's 1997 financial crisis was recently floated again.

During his visit to Thailand in early February, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called for the creation of an Asian Monetary Fund (AMF) -- an Asian version of the International Monetary Fund -- as a buffer against potential economic crises in the region.
