BEIJING/TOKYO -- China's economic growth slowed to 4.9% on the year in the July-September period, down from 6.3% the quarter before, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Wednesday.

The result beat an average market forecast of 4.4%, based on a poll of economists by Nikkei, as the world's second-largest economy looked to be finding a somewhat firmer footing after policy interventions by authorities.
