China eases residential registration rules to boost growth

Cities hope that making it easier for migrants to settle will spur consumption

NANJING, China -- Richie Ding has for the past five years worked in media in Shanghai, but remains registered as a resident of his home county in rural Nanjing. He still sees the big city as "a temporary outpost" where he makes a living.

He says that for people born in the countryside, like him, "Our hearts remain where our parents still live, surrounded by our ancestral land."
