HONG KONG -- China's manufacturing activity shrank for a fifth consecutive month in September, but policymakers are hoping to turn things around with a string of stimulus measures announced last week.

The country's benchmark purchasing managers' index came in at 49.8 for the month, the National Bureau of Statistics announced Monday. The reading rose from August's 49.1 and beat the median forecast of 49.5 in a Reuters poll.
