SHANGHAI -- China's factory activity fell unexpectedly in October, with the benchmark purchasing managers' index dropping below the 50-point level that indicates a contraction, snapping an upward trajectory that had continued since June.

The official PMI registered 49.5 this month, down from September's 50.2, the National Bureau of Statistics reported on Tuesday.
