SHANGHAI -- China posted a surprise expansion in factory activity in September, reversing months of declines despite the impact of repeated COVID-19 lockdowns and weakening exports.

But an official services sector index was less upbeat while the widely watched private Caixin survey suggested that manufacturing actually contracted this month.
