HONG KONG -- China's manufacturing activity shrank for the third consecutive month in July as demand remained subdued despite recent government stimulus in the world's second-largest economy.

The benchmark purchasing managers' index came in at 49.4 for the month, the National Bureau of Statistics announced on Wednesday. The reading was lower than June's 49.5 but higher than a median forecast of 49.3 in a Reuters poll.
