BEIJING -- Births in China fell 630,000 in 2017, just one year after the government repealed its one-child policy, indicating that more action will be necessary than simply permitting more children to solve the challenges of an aging population.
A total of 17.23 million children were born in China last year. But in 2016, that figure had jumped by 1.31 million from the 2015 level to 17.86 million, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics, as all couples were allowed to have a second child.
