HONG KONG -- China's manufacturing activity returned to expansion in August, a widely watched private survey showed on Monday even as the official reading pointed to a deeper contraction.

The Caixin manufacturing purchasing managers' index rose to 50.4 last month from 49.8 in July, but the reading was still the second-lowest since last October. A number above 50 indicates expansion.
