Yearning for independence, island remains tied to mainland's economy

The Hai Pa Wang restaurant chain -- this outlet is in Taipei -- has become a flash point in cross-strait relations.

Beijing is ratcheting up the pressure on Taiwanese businesses that operate in mainland China, apparently in an attempt to fend off independence-minded politicians like President Tsai Ing-wen.

For many Taiwanese businesses, the mainland accounts for a significant part of their strategies. Now they appear to be caught between their home government and Beijing.
