HONG KONG -- The Hong Kong government has sharply raised fees for work visas amid a sustained fiscal deficit, underscoring a shift from the generous, low-tax business environment it used to provide.

Under the new two-tiered schedule, individuals seeking to stay more than 180 days are required to pay 1,900 Hong Kong dollars ($242) -- a HK$600 application fee plus an issuance fee of HK$1,300.
