Developing nations accelerate enactment of Paris climate pact

PARIS -- The Paris Agreement on climate change is scheduled to take effect on Nov. 4, less than a year after it was adopted. The first meeting on implementing the international framework for tackling global warming will be held just days later.

The unusual speed with which the United Nations accord is coming into force stems largely from emerging countries' concern that environmental problems, if left unchecked, will eventually hinder their economic growth. Countries like India and China rushed to ratify the agreement in hopes of securing the necessary technological and financial assistance from developed nations.
