NEW DELHI -- Indian manufacturing activity slowed sharply in July, as the introduction of a much-heralded goods and services tax threw companies and consumers off balance.

The Nikkei India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index, which came out on Tuesday, dropped to 47.9, touching the lowest level since the days of the global financial crisis in February 2009. The reading for June had been 50.9.
