HONG KONG -- An influx of mainland Chinese helped Hong Kong's population inch up as of mid-2024, compared with the end of last year, as the city uses various programs to shore up the ranks of residents amid lingering questions over its attractiveness.

The census and statistics department gave a provisional population estimate of 7,531,800 as of the end of June, up about 0.1% from a revised 7,527,900 at the end of 2023.
