TOKYO -- Long considered reliably affordable foods, eggs and bananas have surged in price here in recent years as businesses grow more comfortable passing on rising costs to consumers.

Japan's consumer price index for eggs rose 23.6% between 2022 and 2024. A popular brand is now at 278 yen ($1.90) for 10, compared with 199 yen five years earlier, according to point-of-sale data from Nikkei POS.
