TOKYO -- The drastic rise of rice prices in Japan has not stopped households from buying more of the dietary staple.

The price of rice jumped by 70.9% in January from a year earlier, consumer price index data released by the internal affairs ministry shows. It is the sharpest gain since comparable data started being kept in 1971. February figures are due out Friday.
