TOKYO -- Consumer prices remain hot in Japan, new data shows, as businesses make up for lost time in passing on higher costs and a weak yen adds to the pressure.

The core consumer price index, which excludes fresh food, rose 3.2% in May from a year earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said Friday, marking nine consecutive months above 3%.
