TOKYO -- Business sentiment among Japan's large manufacturers improved modestly for the first time in six months as the mood at old-economy industries recovered, according to the Bank of Japan's latest Tankan survey, released on Monday.

The headline diffusion index (DI) among large manufacturers was at plus 13 for the April-June quarter, compared with plus 11 for the January-to-March quarter. The median forecast in a QUICK survey of economists was plus 12.
