Japan open to joining South China Sea recon, Nakatani says

Gen Nakatani

TOKYO -- Japan would consider sending its Self-Defense Forces to the South China Sea to monitor Chinese island-building activity in cooperation with the American military, Defense Minister Gen Nakatani told The Nikkei on Monday.

"We don't have any specific plans," Nakatani said in an interview. But "we would always consider Japan-U.S. defense cooperation in the South China Sea."
