TOKYO -- Japan's real gross domestic product gained 0.4% in August compared with the previous month, benefiting from foreign consumption, the Japan Center for Economic Research said Wednesday.

The economic expansion marks a reversal from the contraction seen in July. External demand, or the difference between exports and imports, lifted the GDP growth rate by 0.2 percentage point, the center reports. Imports fell in August relative to exports.
