Japan welcomes a record number of tourists in April

Experience-based tourism, more cruise ships spur surge in arrivals

This year's Easter holidays fell right in the middle of Japan's cherry blossom season.

TOKYO Summer is on its way and Japan's tourism industry has plenty to smile about. The number of foreign visitors to the country topped 2.57 million in April, the highest ever total for a single month.

The figure represents a 23.9% rise from a year earlier, due largely to more visitors seeking experience-based tours, as well as an increase in the number of cruise ships visiting the country. Arrivals for the first four months this year also grew, up 16.4% on the year to 9.11 million.
