TOKYO -- Families of people killed in the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami visited beaches and memorial cenotaphs in Japan's northeastern Tohoku region on Tuesday to pray for the souls of the dead.

More than 20,000 people died as a result of the disaster, while another 27,600 or so were displaced and scattered across Japan.
