TOKYO -- A nuclear power plant on the Sea of Japan coast experienced shaking beyond estimated safety levels during the powerful earthquake that hit the country on New Year's Day, the Nuclear Regulation Authority announced on Wednesday. 

According to the authority and Hokuriku Electric Power Company, the earthquake registered an upper 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7 in the basement of the unit 1 reactor building at the Shika Nuclear Power Plant in Ishikawa prefecture.
