TOKYO -- A tsunami caused by the eruption of an underwater volcano off the South Pacific island nation of Tonga reached Japan's Pacific coast late Saturday.
Tsunami waves 90 cm high were reported on Chichi-jima in the Ogasawara archipelago at 10:52 p.m. and they reached 1.2 meters on the Amami Islands at 11:55 p.m. A wave measuring 1.1 meters was observed in Iwate Prefecture at 2:26 a.m. on Sunday and waves 70cm high were reported at 6:48 a.m. in Miyazaki Prefecture.
