Magnitude-6.9 quake hits southwest Japan, small tsunamis observed

No immediate reports of injury, damage or link to risk of megaquake

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 struck southwestern Japan on Monday, with no immediate reports of injury or damage, and small tsunamis observed in part of Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures, the weather agency said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said it is investigating whether the temblor is linked to an increased risk of a megaquake in the Nankai Trough.
