HO CHI MINH CITY -- Vietnam has ordered the reconstruction of a key bridge ripped down in a super typhoon that left 281 dead, caused a total of more than $1 billion in damage and wiped out an entire hamlet.
Northern Phu Tho province must "urgently coordinate" with the nation's transport ministry and others who will arrange funds for the bridge over the Red River, the government said late on Monday. The structure, seen collapsing in harrowing videos that show drivers tumbling with it, has become emblematic of the worst storm to hit Vietnam in 70 years.
