Thailand's auto production rises for third year

Yet output remains below 2m, short of 2013 peak

Most of the vehicles Thailand produces are bound for foreign markets.

BANGKOK -- Thailand, Southeast Asia's largest auto manufacturing nation, logged higher production for a third straight year in 2017, but continued to fall short of building 2 million vehicles.

Automakers turned out 1,988,823 units, up 2% from the previous year, the Federation of Thai Industries reported Wednesday. Despite the recent increases in production, the annual tally is still down from the 2013 peak of approximately 2,457,000 vehicles.
