The final days of India's tax checkpoints

General services levy to replace web of interstate sales and other tolls

NEW DELHI -- India is about to see the last of its state border checkpoints, which cost its economy an estimated $21.3 billion a year.

The checkpoints currently exist to levy taxes, but an ambitious unified national sales tax system will be put in place on July 1 that will make the posts unnecessary.
