Toward sustainable sushi: UN establishes World Tuna Day

Move a response to the growing threats to the fish's long-term viability

UNITED NATIONS -- As a number of endangered tuna species struggle for survival, the United Nations General Assembly agreed Wednesday to designate May 2 as World Tuna Day to raise awareness of the value of tuna and the threats facing the fish's sustainability.

"There are more hooks and nets set in the oceans for tuna than any other group of fish," noted Caleb Otto, Pacific-island nation Palau's representative to the U.N., in remarks introducing the resolution.
