TOKYO/SEOUL -- The governments of Japan, South Korea, Thailand and other Asian targets of Trump's latest tariff salvo on Thursday said they would act to mitigate the impact of the levies that arrived more powerful than expected -- but only China declared it would take countermeasures.

Early in the morning in Asia time, U.S. President Donald Trump hit countries around the world with "reciprocal tariffs" of up to 49%. China was hit with an added 34% tariff, South Korea was tagged with a 25% rate and Japan was slapped with 24%.
