TOKYO -- China on Friday urged the U.S. to sit down for talks "as soon as possible" but at the same time threatened countermeasures after President Donald Trump slapped additional import tariffs that could exacerbate the ongoing trade war.

The 10% extra levy on Chinese goods will take effect on Tuesday. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump on Thursday blamed China for "a large percentage" of the fentanyl flowing into the U.S. The new levy will be in addition to a 10% duty imposed on Feb. 4, and both of these will be on top of existing tariffs.
