TOKYO -- Japan could offer the purchase of U.S.-made defense equipment to gain leverage in the fourth round of tariff talks with the Trump administration, the country's top trade negotiator said Thursday.

"We strongly urge the U.S. to rethink its successive tariff measures," Ryosei Akazawa, minister for economic and fiscal policy, told reporters before heading to Washington for talks set to start on Friday. "We want to engage in talks with the goal of reaching an agreement as quickly as possible."
