WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump plans to nominate Treasury Undersecretary for International Affairs David Malpass as World Bank president Wednesday, according to government sources, endorsing a proponent of less lending to China.

Malpass was chief economist at investment bank Bear Stearns, which collapsed in the 2008 financial crisis, and supported Trump's 2016 presidential bid. He has also participated in trade negotiations with Beijing as point man on international finance and is considered a China hawk.
