NEW YORK -- The major U.S. stock indexes closed lower on Monday, but pared heavy early losses after Mexico's announcement that it reached an agreement with President Donald Trump to put planned American tariffs targeting the country on hold for a month.

U.S. tariffs of 10% on imports from China and 25% on many imports from Canada are still expected to take effect on Tuesday.
