BEIJING/WASHINGTON -- U.S. and Chinese officials are making last-minute efforts to arrange a deal that would avert a full-scale trade war as President Donald Trump and his counterpart Xi Jinping head into a meeting on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Argentina.

The two leaders are scheduled to meet over dinner on Saturday at the end of the G-20 event, which runs from Friday, in a bid to forestall jacked-up tariffs from the U.S. set to take effect next year. The conflict is expected to intensify should the talks break down.
