LIMA, Peru -- Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday urged Asia-Pacific countries to strengthen cooperation against growing protectionism and unilateralism that would harm the region's economies.

Globalization is weakening, and the economic system should maintain multilateral trading and enhance representation of the Global South, Xi said, using the term for emerging countries in Asia, South America and Africa. His comments all were delivered in a speech read by Commerce Minister Wang Wentao at the APEC CEO Summit, one of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum gatherings here.
