HONG KONG -- China's exports expanded for the fifth straight month in August, underlining solid demand from abroad, in contrast to the sluggish domestic economy.

Total overseas shipments jumped 8.7% on the year in dollar terms, accelerating from the 7% rise in July, according to data released by the Chinese customs office on Tuesday. The figure was higher than the 6.5% increase forecast in a Reuters poll of economists.
