NEW DELHI -- India is taking steps to boost production from fisheries and enhance the industry's infrastructure in hopes of raising the country's seafood exports to one trillion rupees ($12 billion) by March next year, an increase of around 67% from current levels.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has allocated 26 billion rupees for the department of fisheries in the current annual budget, 54% more than the previous year. Most of the budget goes to a program aimed at raising fish production to 22 million tonnes by March 2025, up from nearly 14 million tonnes five years ago, for an average annual growth rate of about 9%.
