BANGKOK -- Laos is ramping up production of a fertilizer ingredient to meet the rush in demand from China as Western sanctions reduce supplies from Russia and Belarus.

In November, the Laotian government announced it had granted 18 companies the right to explore and mine potassium chloride in over 162,000 hectares of deposit-rich areas. The regions include parts of the capital Vientiane, as well as the provinces of Khammouane and Savannakhet.
