Visitors to Japan spent 17% more in first quarter

More tourists came but per-capita expenditures were flat as shopping loses steam

This ski resort in Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost prefecture, is popular among visitors from Asia and Australia.

TOKYO -- Spending by visitors to Japan grew 17.2% on the year in the January-March quarter, but per-person spending was almost unchanged as group shopping sprees slowed down.
