JAKARTA -- Joko Widodo caused quite a stir at a Jakarta airport in November. Indonesia's new president, affectionately known as Jokowi, queued with the masses before taking a seat in economy class on a plane open to the public. The slightly built leader was on his way to Singapore. "This is a private trip, not an official one," he said. He was on his way to see one of his sons graduate from high school.

Indonesia's seventh president has the common touch. He is the first to govern the country without a military background or elite family. He took office on Oct. 20.
