Analysis: Xi signals softer approach to Japan amid double whammy

Tense U.S. ties and ailing economy prompt Xi to meet Ishiba soon after his inauguration

Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba looked very stern when he shook hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping in front of their countries' national flags ahead of their first meeting. In fact, Ishiba neither made eye contact with Xi properly nor smiled.
