PARIS -- While mainstream parties in Europe have been shaken by the rise of political extremism, sparking concern in the financial markets, former European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet expressed confidence in a recent interview that Europe will remain united in its global role.

In France, the far-right party National Rally came in third in the recently held general election, and the radical left has made gains as well.
