WASHINGTON -- Joey Siu, a prominent pro-democracy Hong Kong activist, told Nikkei that she continues to face "worsening harassment and also threats" from China even after moving to the U.S., stressing the global nature of the problem.

Siu holds U.S. citizenship -- she was born in North Carolina in 1999 -- and moved to Hong Kong at a young age. As a student, she became a core figure in the city's pro-democracy movement, but left in response to the draconian security legislation China imposed in June 2020, and now continues her activism from Washington.
