TOKYO/JAKARTA -- The recent discovery of a natural gas reservoir off the coast of Sumatra will form the backbone for Indonesia's energy transition, the country's energy minister told Nikkei Asia.

The United Arab Emirates-based oil and gas company Mubadala Energy announced in May a "substantial gas discovery" from the Tangkulo-1 exploration in the southern Andaman Sea about 65 kilometers off northern Sumatra.
