TOKYO -- Japan aims to set shared standards with the U.S. and Europe on subsidies for electric vehicles, semiconductors and other critical fields, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yasutoshi Nishimura told Nikkei.

With countries racing to reduce carbon emissions and bolster their economic security, there is concern that they will adopt protectionist rules that prioritize their own interests to the detriment of free trade. Japan aims to work with the U.S. and Europe to promote a fair competitive environment.
