NEW YORK -- As U.S. President Donald Trump uses the threat of tariffs to try to push trading partners into deals, former Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross says Japan is an important ally that is unlikely to be a major target of such pressure.

Trump's opposition to Nippon Steel's takeover of U.S. Steel was a case of "very unfortunate" timing in the middle of the presidential campaign, giving Trump little choice but to come out against it, said Ross, who served during Trump's first term.
