WASHINGTON -- Japan should move to protect its companies and consumers from unfairly traded Chinese-made electric vehicles before there is harm to the economy and domestic auto industry, argues Wendy Cutler, a former U.S. diplomat and trade negotiator.

Cutler served as acting deputy U.S. trade representative under President Barack Obama. The interview, which took place before Tuesday's U.S. presidential election, has been edited for length and clarity.
