TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors is confident it can fend off accelerating Chinese competition in the key Southeast Asian car market, its executive vice president told Nikkei Asia in an exclusive interview.

Tatsuo Nakamura said the Japanese auto giant is "still one step ahead" in the region, which makes up its biggest market, while acknowledging the rising threat from Chinese rivals that it needs to "watch carefully."
