BANGKOK -- Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin says his country should take the lead role in engaging with the Myanmar military regime to resolve its two-year civil war as concerns rise about the escalating conflict driving an influx of refugees and illicit drugs across their border.

"We will follow the ASEAN five-point consensus, but having said that, we are the nation that is closest to them. We have a 2,000-kilometer border, so I think it's appropriate -- and I think it would be agreeable to the ASEAN nations -- that we should take the lead role in talking with the Burma government," Srettha said on Tuesday.
